AI agents can now pay money for real

As I was scrolling my LinkedIn feed, my attention was hooked to an employee of one my previous company. He posted about “Agent Payment Protocol (AP2) “ which is created by Google (recently). I just did quick skim through the post, and it blew my mind.

Now , AI agents will be able to make secure, authorized and verifiable method to make payment in ecommerce. Yes u heard that right, all this is possible due to this “AP2” protocol. Thanks to Google for its time and dedication to bring this enhancement in AI.

Now the upcoming chatbots won’t be just limiting itself for QnA , and following custom workflows, but its gonna do smart things for u such as
- you can tell “Find me the cheapest flight to Paris for next month and book it.”

  • or you can tell “Buy me PS5 if its price immediately falls below 50000 INR”.

Now business will have freedom to integrate this ability to AI agents to avoid making the manual payments (May be not all business, there might be choice given to users whether they want to make payment manual or Use AI agent to make that happen)….

What is Agent Payment Protocol.

Well you can understand this AP2 protocol as the standard set of rules that is known and followed by your AI Agent, Merchant’s AI Agent and payment company (like Visa or Mastercard) to ensure secure and verified capital transaction.

The main goal of AP2 protocol is to solve 3 main problems

  • Authorization - how does merchant’s system will come to know that your AI agent has your permission to make a purchase?

  • Authenticity - How can the merchant be sure that your agent isn't a hacker, and that the request truly reflects what you wanted to buy?

  • Accountability - What happens if something goes wrong, like if wrong product is purchased or fraudulent transaction may happen.

How it Works (in simple terms)

The protocol introduces a key concept called "Mandates." Think of a mandate as a digital, tamper-proof contract.

  • Intent Mandate: This is you giving permission to your agent. For example, you sign a digital "contract" that says, "I, Immanuel Dsouza, give my agent permission to buy me a pair of headphones, as long as the price is below $100." This is your clear, verifiable instruction.

  • Cart Mandate: When the conditions you set (like the price dropping to $95) are met, your agent automatically generates a "Cart Mandate." This is a new digital contract that says, "I, the agent, am now making a purchase on behalf of Immanuel Dsouza for this specific pair of headphones at this specific price."

This is all done with cryptography as a result creates a secure, verifiable trail of who did what, and when.

I will insert the official link of Google blog to checkout this protocol in depth

Can’t wait to see what all types of wrappers will be built around with this Agent Payment Protocol.
Peace.
